Have you ever tried to write
one of these things? A Bio? What really is
a “bio” anyway? Webster’s
says it is “an account of the series
of events making up a person's life.” That
being said, it seems like this should be
a little more compelling than where I went
to college (University of Pittsburgh), what
Frat I belonged to (Kappa Delta Rho), where
I volunteer, (Church/Junior Achievement/Young
Life/YMCA/Education Foundation/Etc.) and
what jobs I have had in my career (six total – seven
if you count “sandbag filler”).
So I actually thought I
would take some time and think about the “series
of events” that make up my life. Initially,
this seemed a pretty daunting task. Incidentally,
I truly recommend this exercise to those
who are reading this; it is a very enlightening
experience.
So, what makes up my life?
Not surprisingly, this one is actually pretty
easy; my life is my family. Everything
I do, I do in order to spend as much quality
time with them a possible.
My daughter, Sarah, asked
me when I was her age what I wanted to be
when I grew up. I told her that as
far back as I could remember I wanted to
do two things:
First – I wanted to
be a dad. I knew that if I ever was graced
with children, that they were going to be
my main focus. Nothing would get in the way
of raising my children. God gave me two perfect
kids, Sarah and Sean. They, along with my
wife, Stacy, are truly my life. And
the “series of events” that make
up my life all include them. I look
back at “pivotal” moments in
my life, and each moment has one of these
three people included. I work very hard,
but I work hard so that at 5:00 every day,
I can come home and have my kids meet me
at the door with hugs and kisses and a million
little things that happened that day. I
work hard so that I can spend every minute
my kids are awake with them. Any work that
I have for home waits until after bedtime.
That is their time, and I will always keep
it so.
If I were to take the time
to list the “series of events” that
involve my family, this “bio” would
end up being several pages long. Suffice
to say that I can easily and happily share
many wonderful stories of my life with my
family, some serious, some sad, but most
funny as heck – and I will be happy
to share them with any of you at any time. Those
of you who know me well know that I am always
ready to share a story or brag unabashedly
about my kids.
After this explanation,
Sarah, of course, reminded me that I had
said that there were two things. The second
of my dreams centers on entertaining people
and making them happy. To that end,
I think I have the perfect career. As
a marketer, I get to help people dream big
dreams and follow those dreams as far as
they will take them. I truly believe
that if you are going to dream – dream
big, or don’t dream at all. Isn’t
that truly our goal as marketers? We are
the dreamers – we tap into the dreams
of a potential customer or partner and use
our products or knowledge to help those dreams
come true. We are also entertainers; we are
the cheerleaders of a new idea, product,
or strategy. Very often it is our responsibility
to boost morale, to tell a joke, or to lend
and ear in a crisis. We are the fun-bunch. I
enjoy my role as a marketer and I will sing,
dance, or shout from the rooftops to help
someone make their own dreams come true.
Well, that’s pretty
much my take on this whole “bio” thing. If
we are truly defined by a “series of
events” I am pretty proud of where
my events have brought me, a darn good father
and husband, a good friend, and a successful
marketer.
Stacy, Sarah and Sean, I
guess I am what I
wanted to be when
I grew up – and I
couldn’t be happier. Thank
you for being my “series of events." |
